There are non-intellectual factors which function independent from mental ability, but influence academic performance. Scholastic academic performance, which is normally evaluated in examinations, misrepresents a pupil’s real performance ability. Incompatible research results exist, because high measured mental ability does not always indicate high academic performance. Subjects in this research were grouped according to results on the Scholastic Performance Battery (SPB) and the New South Africa Group Test (NSAGT) average verbal intelligence score divided in a high- and low-performance ability group. The intellectual ability and non-intellectual variables were respectively measured with the New South African Group Test (NSAGT), IPAT-Anxiety Scale, the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) and the High School Personality Questionnaire (HSPQ). Forty-seven boys and fifty-three girls were used in this research project. Significant differences were obtained for Factor B (less intelligent opposite more intelligent, HSPQ), Factor Q2 (socially group-dependent opposite self-sufficient, HSPQ), and the biographical variables “good” performer (girls), pre-primary school attendance (boys), and revision done (study method) during the school term (girls).
