In this study the implications of the subtest profiles of the SSAIS-R (Senior South African Individual Scale - Revised) for a group of fifteen year old pupils are investigated. This age group was selected because of structural restrictions in especially the Non-verbal sub-tests of the SSAIS-R for the older pupils. Correlations between the SSAIS-R and the GSAT (General Scholastic Aptitude Test) are determined. In spite of the expected higher correlation that was obtained between the GSAT and scholastic achievement, the value of the SSAIS-R as measuring instrument is demonstrated. Correlations between every subtest and scholastic achievement were obtained. Multiple regressions were done to determine the predictive value for scholastic achievement of each of the subtests. It was established that the two subtests which were not included in the test battery for the calculation of the total IQ (subtest 10: Memory for Digits and subtest 11: Coding) were good predictors of scholastic achievement. The distribution of all the scores obtained was determined and it could be concluded that the Total, Verbal and Non-verbal scores of the SSAIS-R give a realistic indication of a pupil’s scholastic achievement. There are, however, some of the Non-verbal subtests (especially subtest 7: Block Design) which are structurally restricted. Therefore interpretation of the profiles needs to be qualitative as well as quantitative. Recommendations for the optimum use of the SSAIS-R were made.
